Launching a new business presents its challenges. That is especially true regarding securing small business loans for women.

Small Business Loans for Women

There is an appealing and vast array of options for small business loans for women: SBA loans for women entrepreneurs, traditional financing via bank loans, online loans, business lines of credit, CDFI loans, microloans, and grants.

Business Grants for Women

A grant is a financial award that government institutions, non-profits, and private organizations offer applicants to meet some of their funding needs. Grant recipients do not have to pay back grant money as they do with small business loans. Because grants don’t have to be repaid, the IRS considers grants as taxable income. Grants are usually tied to specific eligibility requirements, and competition to get them can be fierce. Grants also have specific requirements for funding use.

There is a vast database of federal grants listed at Grants.gov. There are state and local business grants for women entrepreneurs. Most geographical areas have economic development offices that provide grants focused on developing the local economy. There are private and non-profit grants, including the Amber Grant, the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards, the Visa “She’s Next,” the FedEx Small Business Grant, and the National Association for the Self-Employed Growth Grants. There are many industry-specific grants, including the Women and Minorities in STEM, FAIRE, and HerRise microgrants.

Each granting entity has different qualifications. To get a grant, it is important to research each grant provider before starting the application process to see if you meet their eligibility requirements.
